Southwest Power Station Unit 1

Southwest Power Station Unit 1 - Springfield, Mo.

Facility retrofits often present unique challenges, especially when existing structures and original drawings do not match. Kiewit used laser scanning technology to develop a 3-D model of the existing Southwest Power Station, allowing the project team to identify problems before they could affect the project schedule or budget.

In a project using more than 1,000 tons of structural steel, initial accuracy is key.The laser scanner was a valuable tool on the Southwest Power Station project, allowing the team to precisely model existing structures and avoid potential steel clashes.

The Kiewit and TIC – The Industrial Company team was awarded the contract to engineer, procure and construct the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system retrofit on an existing 195-megawatt pulverized coal boiler.

The SCR process technology, supplied by The Babcock & Wilcox Company, includes an external economizer, ammonia injection system, SCR reactor, Ceram® catalyst and ductwork from boiler outlet to air pre-heater inlets.
